Woman Charged With Meth Trafficking

On Sept. 6, 2021, which was Labor Day, a deputy with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office pulled over a 58-year-old woman’s vehicle for a minor traffic violation. The deputy thought the woman’s behavior during the stop was suspicious, so he called for a K-9 to walk around the woman’s vehicle. The dog reportedly hit on the car, prompting the police to search it.

During the search, the police reportedly found almost 8 ounces of methamphetamine, a digital scale, $4,000 in cash, and used drug paraphernalia. The woman was placed under arrest and transported to the Indian River County Jail. She was held without bond because of a prior arrest for drug trafficking.

Defending Against Meth Trafficking Charges

The penalties for meth trafficking depend on the weight of drugs the police allegedly find. Under § 839.15(1)(f)(b), Fla. Stat. (2020), a person who is caught in possession of 28 grams up to less than 200 grams of methamphetamine will face a mandatory minimum prison sentence of seven years and a fine of $100,000. However, the report about the woman’s arrest states that she had almost 8 ounces of methamphetamine. Eight ounces is 227 grams, so depending on how much the weight of the meth found in her vehicle, she could face a longer prison sentence under (1)(f)(c) of a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. The serious potential penalties of this type of offense underscore the importance of getting help from an experienced Indian River County criminal lawyer to aggressively defend against these types of charges.
